Daisy and Zeke are transitioning to a new, better dog food. Under the guidance of several trainers, we are now trying a high-protein, grain-free kibble without chicken to prevent Daisy’s stomach sensitivity. We’ve settled on a Canadian brand called Orijen, which is 70 percent meat protein, 30 percent low-carb vegetables and 0 percent grain and fillers. It has six different types of fish, with the first ingredient being salmon.
So far, the dogs are going crazy for it! They absolutely love the food and get excited whenever we go near the closet where it’s stored. Once they fully transition (later this week) and get the good “stuff” in their systems, the high-protein diet will improve their skin and coat, lessen shedding, improve dental health and breath, and boost a healthy, active energy level.
Aunt Joanne also got Zeke an early Christmas present: a peg bowl. As a lot of shelter dogs do, especially those who are puppies or share dens with other dogs, Zeke inhales his food. We had tried everything from putting water in the food to mixing in wet food, and nothing slows him down. He wasn’t gaining much weight, so we decided to change to a high-protein food and try a peg bowl on advice from his trainer.
The peg bowl is magical. He can only get his little nose in one section at a time, which slows down his eating considerably. We’ve actually heard him chew individual pieces of food! Now he takes almost twice as long as Daisy to eat, and he’s begun to fill out a bit.
More updates to come soon–including photos of Thanksgiving in Indy!
